When I was younger, I never thought my eyebrows would be
this important. Back then, I was blessed with thick and bushy eyebrows which
now is a girl's dream, but back then was a nightmare.
When I was a teenager it was all the rage to have
extremely thin eyebrows, resembling the shape of a tadpole (in case you don't know what I'm talking about, here's a picture!)
Despite the fact
every teen in the 90's and early 2000's sported this look, it was
not good. I actually cringe when I think back about how bad my eyebrows were. So instead of embracing my lovely full brows which I inherited from my father,I did what every other teen girl did at that time, I over-plucked. And the end result was much like the picture above.Tragic really. So I decided to do this weeks post on the hottest topic in the world of make up for the past couple of years,
brows.
I'm talking shape, size, length-everything you need to know about how to avoid ugly eyebrows is right here!
SHAPING YOUR BROWS:
Let's start with the basics shall we, shaping. Knowing how to shape your eyebrows yourself at home, could save you 20 Euro a month on going to get them professionally done in a salon, or it could simply help with maintaining them between visits if that's your thing. The general rule in eyebrow shaping is so use the side of your nose like so;
I suggest using a piece of string or the side of a ruler to map these lines out as you'll be more accurate because they are thin and will give a true reading. I also suggest mapping these lines out facing a mirror straight on. As you can see,
line 1 is from the side of your nose straight up to your tear-duct and extended, this is where your brow should start.
Line 2 is from the side of your nose, through your pupil ( when looking straight forward) and extended, this is where your arch of your brow should be.
Line 3 is from the side of your nose to the outer corner of your eye and extended onwards; this is where your brow should end.
Following this plan is a fool proof way to maintain and groom your brows, and also quite handy for those girls who have to draw on the tail of their eyebrows because they don't have one, as you know where everything is supposed to be placed.
FINDING THE RIGHT SHAPE FOR YOU:
I'm now going to break it down into a bit more detail, and talk about different eyebrow shapes to suit different face shapes. This ones a bit more complicated so bare with me.
Here is a general over-view of the different face shapes that there are, as you can see there is a good few different shapes so there is no general shape that suits all. So first, figure out what sort of face shape you have, then we can talk brow shapes.
Now, here we have a chart of face shapes and the eyebrow shape that compliments them the most. For instance, I have a Round Face, so the eyebrow shape that suits me best is to make a high arched brow as it will elongate my face. I should avoid making my eyebrows in that round tadpole like shape as it will only emphasise my round face.
People with an Oval Face, would go for a much more softer arched brow, as it will maintain the illusion of a perfectly symmetrical face etc.
I found this really helped me with getting the right brow shape for myself. I made sure before I started grooming my brows that I let them grow out completely before touching them. I mean, I was walking around like Wolverine for about a month before I waxed them, then after I waxed them I went in with a tweezers just to get rid of any hairs that the wax didn't get.
METHODS OF HAIR REMOVAL:
Moving on to the hair removal process, I would never recommend someone that isn't trained properly to wax their brows at home, especially using the wax strips that you can buy in the likes on boots & Dealz etc. The reason being is that
1. They don't work properly - i.e they don't remove all the hair or remove the hair by the root, causing it to grow back thicker & darker.
2. They can cause skin irritation & allergic reactions if not used properly
3. They can cause ingrown hairs which lead to infections if not treated.
and above are just a few that come to mind. If you want your eyebrows waxed, go to a professional ( like me ;) ) as they won't burn/hurt/damage you.
The best at home method is tweezing. Using a tweezers can be time consuming, especially if you have a lot of hairs to get but it is the safest method that anybody can do without (seriously) injuring themselves, and the most effective.
Threading is also a very effective method of hair removal but again, go to a professional. I don't know if it is even possible to thread ones own eyebrows but I do not recommend trying it out! Haha!
BROW MAKE-UP PRODUCTS:
Now I'm gonna talk make-up. Brow Make-Up. I have tried probably about a million brow products at this stage. When I first started at the hole brow-filling-in process I used to just use brown eyeshadow (matte of course) and it worked for me while I had little experience in what I was doing. I then indulged in a Benefit brow set called Brow Zings, which worked wonders for me while I was just filling them in as opposed to actually drawing them on.
It got to a point then that I wanted a more defined brow, so I was on the market for something that I could draw my eyebrow on with, without too much hassle. I invested in a Rimmel Eyebrow pencil which I would map out the shape of my eyebrow with and then fill in the rest with powder, which worked for a couple of months but I wanted to just use one product to achieve my desired brow look instead of two or three. I invested in the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade as I had seen it all over YouTube and Instagram. I knew this product required skill and time at first but I didn't mind. It didn't disappoint me at all. It was exactly what I wanted in a brow product. It was thin, yet seriously pigmented, a little went a long way and it was perfect for carving out my brows exactly how I wanted except it didn't look like I had two big thick lines across my face. Then when my eyebrows filled out a bit after letting them grow for a couple of weeks I moved on to the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz pencil, which I absolutely love. So after all this, I think I have tried every type of brow product on the market.
FOR THE GIRL WITH SPARSE BROWS:
If your eyebrows look like this, and you want to achieve a fuller and thicker bow, I would reccomend the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade. This really carved out your brow if you know exactly how you want it. I advide using this with a very small precise angled synthetic brush with this and working in small sections.
This stuff is SUPER long-wearing, water-proof, smudge proof and sweat proof. Perfect for a night out or for those hot summer days in work and what not. Definitely worth the investment at 18 Euros as this will last you FOREVER!

FOR THE GIRL WITH THIN BROWS:
If you've got brows, however they're not the shape you want or are too thin, I would recommend an eyebrow pencil. My one of choice is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz ( in Chocolate) because in my opinion it is the best. This is the perfect size to manipulate my brow and draw on 'hair-like' strokes where I lack it without looking too fake or harsh. It's a bit of an investment at 19 Euros but in my honest opinion it is the best thing to happen to my brows ever.Apart from the size of the nib, the actual colour range is really good and you're guaranteed to find the right shade for your brows.

FOR THE GIRL WITH 'ALREADY THERE' BROWS:
There are a few girls out there that were lucky enough to have a boost of regrowth after the stage of over-plucking and their eyebrows are the perfect shape that they want them. All these girls want is something to fill in their eyebrows as opposed to actually drawing them on, for this I would recommend a brow powder. Benefit do a really good brow kit with a wax and a powder. You use the wax first to tame your brows into the shape that you want, and then you go over it with the powder and fill them in for a bit more definition.
This kit comes in 3 different shades: light, medium & dark. I use the medium one when I reach for this to do my brows as it is the perfect shade for me and matches the colour of my hair perfectly. This kit comes with two little brushes: one for the wax and one for the powder and a tweezers-which is actually really good! This is a great kit for someone who just wants to fill in their eyebrows but not great for the girls that need to actually shape them. It is expensive, but I've had mine for nearly 2 years and I still have loads of it left.
